Clemson undergraduates invest in the future by teaching science to middle-schoolers despite pandemic

Despite the challenges COVID-19 has brought, Clemson University students continue to reach out to local middle schools in an effort to engage young students in scientific exploration and generate interest for the natural sciences.

Jessica Jones, the senior graduate student in the JCM lab, has been awarded a SMART (Science, Mathematics, and Research For Transformation) scholarship, an award that is part of the National Defense Education Program. This award will fund Jess’s stipend through the completion of her doctorate, at which point she will move to the U.S. Army Public Health Center located in Edgewood, MD.
The Cryo-EM structure(s) of the Plasmodium vivax hexokinase have been published!

In a collaborative effort with Dr. Sriram Subramaniam’s group at the University of British Columbia, the cryo-EM structure of the tetrameric P. vivax hexokinase has been solved and the work published in IUCrJ. While the active site of the hexokinase is similarto the mammalian enzymes, the tetrameric organization is distinct with the structural requirements foroligomerization offering the possibility of structure-guided development of antimalarial drugs.

In an article featured in Clemson's online news, the MTM lab's research discovering the function of the protein Pex13.2 is described, along with its potential impact in the future of curative medicine for treating the infection of T. brucei, T. cruzi, and Leishmania.

Community Outreach: CU INVESTors
2014-Present
Since 2014, Meredith Morris has been heading a Creative Inquiry program through Clemson University that reaches out to students in high school, middle school, and elementary school in order to expose students of all ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds to STEM fields. The goal of CU INVESTors is to ensure that the future of STEM is just as representative of minority populations as the American population, itself.
